Winter May Actually Arrive This Weekend

For the first time this winter there is lots of winter weather to talk about. The first part of this is the coldest air of the season on the way Friday night into the weekend. The second part is the possibility of a little winter precipitation east of the mountains. While the second part is still questionable the first part is a sure thing. The mountains will see a good 1-3” of snowfall with the Arctic front Saturday. There’s some new energy showing up in the Gulf of Mexico this weekend with the past few model runs. This is a trend that I’m watching closely.

This new energy stays offshore but if it syncs up with the arctic air then we might have more to talk about. Stay tuned!

Here’s a detailed discussion of what’s going on and some of the possibilities this weekend and next Tuesday morning.

Arctic Air:

The first part of the story will be the cold air returning with a vengeance.

Part II snow chances Saturday:

This looks to mainly be a mountain event with a powdery 1-3” snowfall the connection to the gulf low is something to watch. With the really cold air and with highs in the teens combined with 20-30 mph winds. This 1-3” will feel a lot worse in the mountains both Saturday and Sunday.

Snow chances Tuesday:

This part looks iffy right now but Tuesday morning will have to be watched closely. Below is the ECMWF model snowfall forecast for Tuesday morning.
