Amazing ski season in the Southeast
When people from other parts of the country hear that there are ski resorts in the North Carolina Mountains they are amazed. People tend to forget that the central Appalachians have elevations of 5-6,000 feet. That combined with a directly link to the northwest flow moisture off of the great lakes produced quite a bit of snowfall. This season the snow totals have been off the charts and we still have one month left in the winter season. Appalachian in Blowing Rock has received 66.7” so far when they only average 50”. Sugar Mountain is already at 87.5” which is well above their 78” average and Ski Beech mountain is already at 95” a whole 15” above their normal of 80” You can see those are some high average snowfalls but this season has not only surpassed those averages but it has been the most since the winter of 1995-1996. That too was another active winter in the southeast when the records that have already been broken in Washington, Baltimore and Philadelphia were set. There’s a chance that the North Carolina Mountains could surpass those totals as well.
