Rock Hill Tornado Debris Found 20 miles away in Ballantyne

After seeing the devastation of the Rock Hill tornado first hand on Thursday and reporting on it. I started getting e-mails, Tweets, and Facebook messages from people in Fort Mill, SC and Ballantyne in North Carolina.

They all said after seeing my reports on TV and on Facebook and Twitter that they realized stuff they had found in their yards was from the tornado. It is common for light weight materials be carried long distances after a tornado lifts. For instance after the Alabama tornadoes earlier this year papers from some of the homes damaged was found way up in Tennessee. In the Rock Hill tornado it was mostly insulation but some pictures and even a check of one of the victims was found 20 miles northeast in Ballanytne.

The Check:

This check which is from the home of one of the fatalities. Steve Courtney sacrificed his life saving his daughters life. This check was found among some pictures and other debris in the woods and back yard of a family in Ballantyne. Their neighborhood is right off HWY 521. This check and debris traveled about 19 miles.

Yellow Insulation:

This debris was found in Fort Mill, SC about 13 miles Northeast of where the tornado lifted.

This bit of insulation was actually found northeast of the check location in Ballantyne as well which is about 20-21 miles northeast of where the tornado lifted.
