Spring is the most extreme season for Charlotte

Many people have asked me lately, “What’s the deal with all the crazy temperatures swings?”. Well, there are a few things going on but not all are unique to just this Spring. In the transition seasons of Spring and Autumn, we tend to get very big swings in temperatures. During the Spring and Fall, both branches of the Jetstream are very active as they buckle north and south they can cause huge swings in temperatures. This is also what causes all the severe weather and gusty winds we see during this time of the year.

To illustrate this, I looked at the warmest and coldest temperatures we have seen in each season. I then looked at the difference between these 2 extremes to show which season was the most extreme. As you might expect Spring was the most extreme, followed by Autumn, then Winter and least extreme was Summer. So while this Spring might seem like it’s been all over the place that’s actually kind of normal for these parts.

Spring really changes from beginning to end when you think about a season that includes the snowiest day of the calendar year on March 2nd and also includes Memorial Day weekend. So we really do go from Winter to Summer in just a short 3 months.
