What is Graupel?
With many reports of graupel today and sometimes misidentified with snow I thought I’d share what exactly it is. It’s a form of precipitation that isn’t seen very often even though it’s present in almost every thunderstorm or thundershower. Snow chances next week?
The buzz has been around for a few days and while I have been talking about it there are a few words of caution. We are just now getting closer to a time where some specifics are starting to come into clearer focus. There are still some serious doubts about the track and location but there’s no denying that the pattern is very conducive for a winter storm in the Southeast to the Mid-Atlantic. Read more

9 Years ago today we saw almost 2’ of snow
One of the biggest snowstorms in Charlotte history started on this date 9 years ago. In an amazing day of snow that saw the city come to a stand still at noon time when everyone left work and school at the same time. We saw 2 waves of snow on during the day and another at night into the 27th. We even saw thunders now several times.

Spring will be on hold for a while
March 1st is just a few days away and with it the beginning of Meteorological Spring. Which runs from December 1st through February 28th. It certainly looks like mother nature has different plans for the eastern half of the country in particular the Southeast. Read more

Ice Potential Friday Morning in the Mountains.
Thursday night into Friday morning a perfect set-up for freezing rain will develop for parts of the western Carolinas. An area of cold dry high pressure will “wedge” itself up against the mountains starting Thursday evening. This typical cold air damming event is when dry cold air gets trapped east of the mountains here in the Carolinas.

Winter Storm Chances Increasing Friday
The prospects for a winter storm impacting the entire area are increasing for Friday. There are still large questions of the amounts of precipitation that will fall but a few things are becoming clearer today. Number one being this will likely be an all winter precipitation event and likely for a large part of our area. The air is plenty cold enough and dry enough to keep everything either snow/sleet or freezing rain. We aren’t looking at much of any rain at all right now.

Coldest air of the winter on the way next week?
With the warm air moving in this week many have given up on any winter weather again this year. I think mother nature is saying to us, “Not so Fast!” There are very good signs that something called a “Sudden Stratospheric Warming Event” may mean major cold for the US by the end of this month.

Colder pattern developing for the second half of December.
Things certainly are changing in the atmosphere from a warm and dry pattern to more of a cold and wet pattern in the southeastern U.S. As I’ve been talking about for a while the pattern seems to be flipping back to a more winter like one for the end of this month. Read more
